One asbestos death each year in Hammersmith and Fulham

Asbestos in old buildings is causing the death of at least one person in Hammersmith and Fulham every year, new research shows.

Statistics released last week revealed the borough is ranked 24th out of the 33 in London for deaths and illnesses caused by the substance.

The table - topped by Barking & Dagenham - was issued by the Health and Safety Executive to coincide with its campaign, Asbestos: The Hidden Killer, which is set to run through November.

Steve Coldrick, disease reduction director at HSE, hopes the statistics will help raise awareness amongst builders and other workers who are most vulnerable to asbestos, which may be present in any buildings constructed before 2000.

"Exposure to asbestos is the biggest single cause of work-related deaths, with around 4,000 people dying a year from asbestos-related disease," he said.

Asbestos-related diseases can take almost 40 years to develop, but Jill Morrell of the British Lung Foundation said, "Creating awareness for the future is very important".

unison is campaigning for the council to recognise workers memorial day on 28th April. Last year the council refused to allow a minutes silence or have the flag flown half mast at the town hall as they say they support to many causes. Every year in the uk 50,000 people die unneccessarily of industrial iullness or accidents. thats 2.3m worrldwide, more than are killed in war. please note the above story and badger your local councillor to support workers memorial day.
