Tesco store denied
Traders in a popular shopping area have won a campaign to keep the supermarket giant Tesco out of their street.
Plans to redevelop a site in Munster Road and make way for a Tesco Express supermarket with two floors of office space were denied by Hammersmith and Fulham Council on October 28.
The firm also wanted to build an additional single-storey office and a separate two-storey, three-bedroom house on the site.
But the scheme was quashed by councillors because who thought the additional noise would affect neighbours.
They also said the development would generate too much traffic for the area and remained disatisfied with the servicing arrangements.
Bruce Hodgson, 44, who is the manager of Budgens supermarket in Munster Road, led the campaign against the developer, fearing a Tesco supermarket would put him and his neighbours out of business.
Mr Hodgson said: "I'm quietly ecstatic. They will live to breathe another day because they can appeal from here, but I'm glad the argument we put forward resonated with the councillors."
Tesco spokeswoman Carol Lesley said: "We're extremely disappointed by this decision ...many local people will be unhappy.
''We will await the committee report and consider our options."
