Hammersmith and Fulham 'flu and sickness bug advice

Doctors from Hammersmith and Fulham have offered residents advice after the beginning of an outbreak of winter vomiting bug and influenza.

The borough's primary care trust predicted today that as residents head back to work and school, GPs are like to see the spread of both illnesses continue.

Chair of Ealing, Hammersmith and Hounslow Local Medical Committee Dr Adam Jenkins said: "As in December, we continue to see a large number of patients with both the flu and winter vomiting virus.

"However this year we are seeing a great deal more cases of real 'flu, by which I mean a virus that keeps patients in bed for anything up to four or five days."

He added that most people suffering from one of these viruses should drink plenty of fluids, take paracetamol to help bring down a temperature and stay at home.

There is no need for people to visit their GP, he said, unless the patient is frail and elderly, suffering from another illness which may be affected by the virus, has a long term cough with chest pain, or has had their fever return after a week or so.

Dr Jenkins continued: "To help limit the spread of infection I would urge those with one of these bugs to stay at home when possible. Try not to visit elderly friends or relatives who may be seriously affected and wash your hands regularly."
